Marianne Thieme LLM, LL.D, director

Marianne Thieme was appointed as director of the Nicolaas G. Pierson Foundation on January 1st 2022.

Marianne is co-founder of the Party for the Animals. On November 2006 she was elected in national parliament for the first political party for non-humans in the world. For thirteen years she led the House of Representatives faction. In October 2019 she left the House of Representatives. During her years at the Party for the Animals, Marianne worked closely with the Nicolaas G. Pierson Foundation. She starred in the documentaries Meat the Truth (2007), Sea The Truth (2010), Haas in de Marathon (2012), One Single Planet (2015) en #Powerplant (2019).

Marianne holds a Master of Laws (LLM) from Erasmus University in Rotterdam. On May 6th 2019 she received an honorary doctorate of Laws (LL.D) from Andrew University in Michigan, United States, for her lifelong commitment to stewardship, integrity and the development of the law. Earlier, Marianne worked at Bont voor Dieren (“Fur for Animals”) and she was director at Wakker Dier, a foundation that fights for the abolition of industrial farming.

Marianne published several books, among which De eeuw van het dier (2004), Het gelijk van de dieren, het geluk van de mensen (2009), Méér (2013), De kanarie in de kolenmijn (with Ewald Engelen) (2016) and Groeiend verzet (2019).
